Four key changes to the ISO standards.

Whilst there are many changes to the new standards for Quality, Environment and OHS management systems; ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Here are four changes to the ISO standards which we think have the potential to create some real positive benefits.

  1. The use of the term “organization’s business process
    • This simple change of words has huge potential in that (hopefully) organizations will understand that it’s about the business and not about the individual departments of quality, OHS and the Environment.
  2. Risk-based thinking 
    • The removal of preventive action and the introduction of risk-based thinking will hopefully ensure organizations think about the real risks to their business and develop effective solutions to manage those risks, which will not of course only be OHS risks. Let’s hope all those poorly written corrective and preventive action procedures disappear.
  3. Context of the organization
    • The external and internal issues that affect an organization now have to be identified along with its strategic direction. This should help in ensuring that the management system actually fits the organization and where it wants to be in the future.
  4. Process inputs and outputs
    • Whilst many people seem to be excited by the process approach, it has in fact been in ISO 9001 since 2000. What is new however is the requirement for process inputs and outputs to be determined, which hopefully will drive organizations to think more about their processes rather than the clauses of an individual standard.
